Both had been part of musical life since prehistory among all classes

In the nineteenth century those in the business of music discovered how to make substantial amounts of money from them .(Still obvious in today's culture Dancing with the Stars, American Idol.)

Dance ranged from challenging works for concert performance to simple duets for amateurs, and was comparable to the range of song, form sophisticated art songs to simple ditties.

There was more widespread use of dance in theatrical productions

Social dancing and choral singing for all classes became popular group activities for all classes of people

work for one soloist and orchestra as opposed to two or more soloists and orchestra
