James is working on a research project where he is examining the scholastic records of previous graduates of his university to see if there is a relationship between one's grade point average (GPA)
 
  and the degree to which one participated in extracurricular events. Unfortunately, while the data for GPA were readily available, information regarding extracurricular participation was not always recorded in a consistent manner. This problem with the use of archival data is known as
