Answer to Question 1

The transformer has a primary winding and a secondary winding that are isolated from each other. When voltage is applied to the primary winding, it is transferred to the secondary winding by induction. The ration of the primary voltage to the secondary voltage is set by the turns ratio of the primary and secondary winding.
