Answer to Question 1

Relays are not connected to the load circuit and are smaller, generally 15

amps or less. Contactors are connected in the load circuit and will need to be larger.

Answer to Question 2

A relay is an electrically operated switch that uses an electromagnet to open or close a set of electrical contacts. Normally only a small amount of current is required to energize the electromagnet. This allows for a device with a high current rating such as an electric heater to be operated by a control relay operated by a low current signal. The control wires can be much smaller and separate from the large main supply lines required for the main load.
