Answer to Question 1

A two stage thermostat is required for the heating operation. The first stage of heat energizes the refrigeration circuit of the heat pump: the compressor and both indoor and outdoor fan motors. The second stage energizes the auxiliary heat when the heat pump cannot maintain the temperature on its own.
