Answer to Question 1

Both systems can reduce the electrical requirement at a home or business. A grid-tie battery-backed system can have autonomy from the grid in case it goes down, which can provide emergency power; a system without battery backup cannot. The battery backed up system requires higher initial expense, ongoing maintenance costs, and a dry space that is well ventilated for batteries, whereas this expanse is avoided in a non-backed up system.

Answer to Question 2

A receiver at the top of a tower is heated by heliostats which direct sunlight to the receiver. A heat transfer fluid is used to produce steam, driving a steam turbine and generator. Hot, molten salt can be stored to allow electricity to be generated when there is no sunlight available.
