The large-impact hypothesis proposes that the Moon formed when a very large planetesimal smashed into the proto-Earth. Such a collision would have ejected debris into space, and model calculations indicate that some of the debris would have settled into a disk in orbit around Earth. The material in the disk would then have quickly collected to form the Moon
