Theory predicts that most of the irregularities in the hot gas of the big bang should be about one degree in diameter if the Universe is flat. If the Universe were open, the most common irregularities would be smaller. Careful measurements of the size of the irregularities in the cosmic background radiation show that the observations fit the theory very well for a flat Universe.
