When the Earth is slightly further from the Sun than average during Northern Hemisphere summers, the summers are slightly cooler. Because most of the landmass where ice can accumulate is in the Northern Hemisphere, if summers there are cooler, it is possible that not all of the ice and snow from the previous winter will melt, which allows glaciers to grow larger.
