More information is conveyed; the Greek-letter designation generally corresponds to the brightness of the star, and the constellation describes where in the sky the star is located.

Modern astronomers often refer to a star by its constellation and a Greek-letter assigned according to its brightness within the constellation. The brighter stars are generally the first few letters of the Greek alphabet.
