As Mercury was molten, the dense iron core formed from sinking iron and nickel. But smaller Mercury cooled off much faster than Earth, so its core cooled and started shrinking as it froze solid. This contraction caused the crust above to wrinkle and form the vast scarps that run across Mercury's crust.
