Question 2

Which of the following best describes what would happen if a 1.5-solar-mass neutron star, with a diameter of a few kilometers, were suddenly (for unexplained reason) to appear in your home town?

  A) The combined mass of Earth and the neutron star would cause the neutron star to collapse into a black hole.
  B) It would rapidly sink to the center of Earth.
  C) The entire Earth would end up as a thin layer, about 1 cm thick, over the surface of the neutron star.
  D) It would crash into Earth, throwing vast amounts of dust into the atmosphere that, in turn, would cool the Earth; this is probably what caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
