Answer to Question 1

a. On the vernal equinox, the Sun rises due east, reaches an altitude of 56N on the meridian, and sets due west.
b. On the summer solstice, the Sun rises more than 23.5 north of due east, reaches an altitude of 56 - 23.5 = 32.5 on the meridian in the north, and sets more than 23.5 north of due west.
c. On the winter solstice, the Sun rises more than 23.5 south of due east, reaches an altitude of 56 + 23.5 = 79.5 on the meridian in the north, and sets more than 23.5 south of due west.
