Answer to Question 2

The escape speed allows an object moving fast enough to overcome the gravity of a body and escape into space. But for very massive black holes, if you are so close as to be within the event horizon, now this speed is greater even than c, the speed of light, so neither matter nor even energy can escape the gravity of the black hole.
