This depends on the sort of transmission. Until the last few years, it was still
possible to get better mileage from a stick shift car. The development of continuous torque
transmissions has evened the playing field and given some advantage to the automatic
transmission.

These particles are much smaller than the salt particles near the sea and typical
dust particles to which our ancestors were exposed. This means that humans have no
evolutionary defense mechanisms for such tiny particles, and they can travel unimpeded into
