Answer to Question 1

Ruddiman has suggested that ancient humans staved off a glacial episode or at
least extended the interglacial by cultivating crops such as rice (which releases methane) and
felling trees to clear fields, which releases carbon dioxide.
Some would consider the warming of Earth due to human intervention a good thing. There
is less snow here in Ohio, and we use less gas to heat our house than we used to.
Unfavorable changes include sea level rise, habitat fragmentation, reduction of predators of
disease reservoir organisms, increased spread of infectious disease vectored by insects
whose range is increased, bleaching of corals, loss of biological diversity, changes in timing
of birds and their prey, and so on. The list could go on for quite a while, but it gives an idea
of the unfavorable changes.

Answer to Question 2

This is the case. The alveoli in the lungs are tiny sacs; the space is filled with so
many of these alveoli that they collectively give the inside of the lung a very large surface
area.
