It is often stated that natural systems are capable of cleaning pollution (at least when the contamination is not large). How can plants and animals in the environment clean water?

As MSW, trash is indeed an energy resource.

Answer to Question 2

The contaminants are used in the organism, and many compounds are rendered
harmless (becoming a normal constituent of the organism.
