Answer to Question 1

Analysis of various oil samples from around the world showed consistency in
which carbon chains were present: hopanoids. These compounds are found in blue-green
algae, which implies that these were the origin of the oil. (See History of energy, p. 217.)

Answer to Question 2

There are both positives and negatives. On the positive side, mountaintopping
creates newly flat land in a region with many mountains. The flat land can be sold to
businesses, bringing jobs to the poorer regions of these states. This can increase the local
tax base and allow expansion of government services.
On the negative side are water degradation, permanent pollution of streams by materials
brought to the surface, and other hazards. Wildlife and fish can be adversely affected. The
quality of life for residents can plunge.
