This is the case for swidden agriculture if we refer to energy yield ratios (energy
out/energy in), because most energy input is human labor, but not if we are referring to
actual yields (in t/ha). Mechanized agriculture has far higher yields of foodstuffs per
hectare.

Yes, absolutely. People need homes, They need to eat. Both of these take land.
