Answer to Question 1

Hydroelectricity is just one sort of renewable. Wind energy, focused solar energy,
and photovoltaic electricity are other examples of renewables. California does have many
rivers and large dams such as Shasta Dam and Folsom dam (among around 40 others). As
a result, California has extensive hydroelectric resources as well as large numbers of days of
sunlight.

Answer to Question 2

California has a Mediterranean climate and has a comparatively large number of
days of sunlight. It is also home to many natural wonders. This latter point has convinced
many Californians that nature is worth protecting, while the natural resources available made
it relatively easy to implement renewables.
