Which of the following best describes the operation of a photovoltaic (solar) cell?
  a. The operation of the solar cell does not depend on the light's wavelength.
  b. The best solar cells are not made from semiconductor materials.
  c. A solar cell acts like a LED operating in reverse.
  d. The solar cell is most similar to a npn or pnp transistor.
  e. Solar cells are limited to an efficiency of about 6.

Question 2

You are trying to build an n-type impurity semiconductor and know the properties of the silicon as well as the dopant. To make the semiconductor, you will use a dopant with

  b. a valence band just below the Fermi energy of silicon.
  c. a Fermi energy just above the Fermi energy of silicon.
  d. a conduction band just above the Fermi energy of silicon.
  e. a Fermi energy just below the conduction band of silicon.

Answer to Question 1

c.
The incoming photon promotes an electron from the valence band to the conduction band, resulting in the flow of electric current.

Answer to Question 2

e.
The Fermi energy of the dopant is the highest filled band, or the valence band. If this band was just below the conduction band of silicon, electrons from the dopant could easily be donated to the silicon to conduct electricity, making an n-type semiconductor.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.

Malaria mortality rates are falling. Increased malaria prevention and control measures have greatly improved these rates. Since 2000, malaria mortality rates have fallen globally by 60% among all age groups, and by 65% among children under age 5.

Certain topical medications such as clotrimazole and betamethasone are not approved for use in children younger than 12 years of age. They must be used very cautiously, as directed by a doctor, to treat any child. Children have a much greater response to topical steroid medications.

Fatal fungal infections may be able to resist newer antifungal drugs. Globally, fungal infections are often fatal due to the lack of access to multiple antifungals, which may be required to be utilized in combination. Single antifungals may not be enough to stop a fungal infection from causing the death of a patient.

Though methadone is often used to treat dependency on other opioids, the drug itself can be abused. Crushing or snorting methadone can achieve the opiate "rush" desired by addicts. Improper use such as these can lead to a dangerous dependency on methadone. This drug now accounts for nearly one-third of opioid-related deaths.
