o Counselor should help them to develop a self-concept awareness, including their ethnic background
o Other implications include: developing more internally directed behavior, becoming more aware of job opportunities, clarifying motivational aspirations and dealing with ambivalence towards whites.
Asian American Men
o Typically consider family honor more important than personal goals.
o Decisions are based on what is best for the family.
o Counselors should make sure that the counseling relationship is carefully balanced. Many will expect a hierarchical relationship, rather than a collaborative or egalitarian one.
o Other implications: helping them to understand organization systems and bureaucracies, improving communication skills, learning to understand work environments and introducing role models.
