 In order to be culturally competent, it is imperative that the counselor has a keen awareness.
 This awareness should be high in terms of recognizing values and assumptions that influence a client's behavior.
 Furthermore it is imperative that there is an understanding of issues such as racism and oppression that may influence a person's identity and perceptions.
