1. reflect the content of the communication by paraphrasing what is being said instead ofevaluating it.
2. Show that you empathize by reflecting the student's feelings/
3. Ask open-ended questions to encourage the students to continue to share theirfeelings.

1. You must be willing to hear what the student has to say and be willing to take the timeto listen.
2. You must be willing to help the student.
3. You must be willing to accept the student's feelings.
4. You must see the student as a person who is capable and competent enough to understand his or her own problems.
