Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: Using elaborated language helps children excel in cognitive development, which is essential for school success. Elaborated language is grammatically complex and provides greater potential for organizing experience within an abstract meaning system.

Answer to Question 2

ANSWER: One major cause of the growth in female-headed families in urban poverty areas is the high rate of young African American men who drop out of the labor force, are incarcerated in prisons, or otherwise are excluded or exclude themselves from mainstream institutions. This greatly reduces the pool of males who can participate in stable families. Consequently, the likelihood of upward mobility is reduced.
