De-duplication or de-duping is the process of electronically eliminating the duplicates of the same document. For example, you need only one copy, not thousands, of the same e-mail that was sent to the entire corporate mail list. The same is true for the copies of letters sent to many recipients, unless you are trying to show knowledge, republication, or similar issues. De-duping is important in order to reduce the costs of document review, since fewer documents will need to be scrutinized by attorneys.
