The three tests or standards used by the Court to interpret and apply the Establishment Clause are: 1. the Lemon test, which requires the government to refrain from policies that: a. have the purpose of advancing or inhibiting religion, b. have the primary effect of advancing or inhibiting religion, and/or c. results in an excessive entanglement between religion and government; 2. the endorsement test provides that government may not take action that makes it appears as though it is endorsing a particular faith; and 3. the coercion test maintains that government may not take act that may tend to coerce individuals into participating in religious activity.
