Answer to Question 1

Steeper slope angles, and structural factors like bedding plane orientations, make a slope susceptible to mass wasting. Human alteration of slopes can affect susceptibility, as well. Vegetation can help anchor materials. Water contributes to weathering, adds weight to porous materials on a slope, decreases the strength of unconsolidated sediments, and can increase the slope angle. Rainstorms or earthquakes can trigger movement.

Answer to Question 2

In slides, a cohesive or semicohesive unit of Earth materialslips downslope in continuous contact with the land surface. Flows are masses of water-saturatedunconsolidated sediments that move downslope becauseof the pull of gravity.Compared with slides, which tend to move as cohesive units, flows involve considerable churning and mixing of the materialsas they move.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
