Answer to Question 1

The student can mention two of the following from the text:
-- 1927 flood of historic magnitude on the Mississippi River that caused hundreds of deaths, and millions of dollars in damage. It also called attention to the difficulties in managing North America's water resources through the construction of dams, levees, and other flood control technology.
-- 1930s Dust Bowl, which was caused by warm and windy weather, and inappropriate agricultural practices, that focused nation attention on soil erosion and conservation.
-- The impact of heavy industry on air quality that received national attention in 1948 when an inversion layer of highly polluted air settled over the steel community of Donora, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh that resulted in 20 fatalities and caused thousands of residents to develop respiratory illnesses.

Answer to Question 2

Students should know that overfishing reduces the fish populations and the biological diversity of those populations, especially of species with the greatest economic importance.
Fishing rights remain a major issue both in Alaska and in the Far North Atlantic. Many communities have an acute interest in maintaining the fisheries resource base because their livelihoods depend on it. However, today's fish populations have been drastically reduced on both the Pacific and the Atlantic coasts of the Far North due to intense overfishing by domestic and foreign fishing fleets, which have decimated fish populations.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
