Answer to Question 1

The Transcontinental Railroad reduced the isolation of the Pacific Northwest, increasing trade and encouraging thousands of new settlers to the region. Seattle and Vancouver became major transportation and trade centers because they were located at the end points of major rail lines.

Answer to Question 2

The border was set at the 49th parallel of latitude. However, Vancouver Island had already become the primary location of British operations in the region and so the island went to Canada.
