Answer to Question 1

North America's political economy includes the links between North America's economy and politics. Economic patterns and linkages have a major impact on political dynamics and relationships between regions in North America and North America's political relations to the rest of the world.

Answer to Question 2

Basic employment is employment in the industry or industries that a region uses to generate trade and income from elsewhere. Nonbasic employment is employment that provides goods and services to the local economy. Nonbasic employment is generated by basic employment. When a city or town experiences growth in a basic industry, the growth in basic employment results in growth in nonbasic employment (for example, teachers, doctors, and jobs in retail).
