Answer to Question 1

Student answers for this question will also vary. The purpose of the question is to illustrate to students that the decision to operate an independent or franchised restaurant is often heavily dependent upon the segment in which the restaurant will operate. In many cases, quick service restaurants do best when they are franchised. Examples include burger and chicken chains. Alternatively, most fine dining restaurants (with some exceptions) tend to be operated as independent units.
