Answer to Question 1

Answer: The study presented in the textbook used the Twenty Statements Test, in which students are asked to make twenty statements that apply to them. In this study these were coded into four categories: Physical, Social, Attributive (I am a warm person, for example), or Global (I am a human being). The study found that American students used Attributive statements much more than Japanese students and Japanese students used Social descriptions much more than American students. This may reflect social or societal differences since Japan is considered a collectivist society, while America is an individualistic society.
