Second, as the number of federal prisoners increases, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has turned to private prisons to expand its capacity.
Between 2000 and 2012, the number of federal inmates in private prisons more than doubled, from about 15,500 to about 40,500.67
The current emphasis on imprisoning violators of immigration law seems likely to ensure that this trend will continue.
