and other common responsibilities include investigating drug crime, maintaining
o the county jail, serving eviction notices, keeping order in the courthouse,
collecting taxes, and enforcing the orders of the court.
Both investigate crime and do routine patrol. Local police departments are more
o likely to perform trafficrelated functions whereas sheriff's departments are
more likely to be involved in county court and jail operations.
