Technology has assisted at supervising parolees in the community. Handheld computers, electronic kiosks, concealed weapons detection, and face and voice recognition technologies have assisted in the supervision of parolees in the community. Remote alcohol and drug monitoring are available to parole officers as well as computer surveillance software and GPS devices.

The majority of adults on parole are typically male. Only 14 percent of those on parole are female. All races and ethnic backgrounds are represented. The majority of ethnic backgrounds of people on parole are whites, African Americans, and Hispanics and Latinos. Most people on parole are serving a sentence of a length of a year or more. The majority of people on parole were sentenced for drug, violent, or property offenses.
