Unique lower class value system not in direct opposition to middle class
Some shared values with middle class, just different priorities
Value of youth learned from older peers, unregulated by absent fathers
Autonomy, toughness, fate, trouble, street smartness, excitement and risk taking are all important for status and survival
Focal concerns allow for success in both legitimate and illegitimate activities
