Answer to Question 1

Answer: Answers will vary. Students may suggest that since organizational factors and possibilities are somewhat known to the officer before he or she is hired, they are the least likely to have strong effects. Some may feel that the situations in which the officer finds him- or herself are most important, regardless of the time of day and other factors. Some may argue that the neighborhood is part of the situation and should not be distinguished. Some may say that strong individual characteristics in the officer's personality will carry over into all situations.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Answers will vary. Students may identify situations in which costs of booking are prohibitive, an injured or sick person takes priority, there is not enough room to hold all suspects, dealing with suspects of minor infractions would prevent dealing with more major infractions, the criminal justice system is not the best way of dealing with the suspect (for example, in a case of mental illness or a very young juvenile), etc.
