(1) metallic couplings use metal elements for their flexible member and (2) elastomeric couplings generally use a non-metal element, typically rubber, nylon or plastic.

The ultimate goal is to have a coupling that provides long, trouble-free service. To achieve this goal, you must have accurate alignment and proper installation along with selecting a coupling suited for you application.
