V-belts are attached together with a common backing. A common back insures that all belts are exactly the same length and all belts share equally in the transmission of power.

This provides a seal to prevent air from being drawn in. It also provides positive lubrication for the primary packing rings. Lantern rings also permit the injection of a clean, cool fluid for pumps handling chemical or abrasive materials.
