Answer to Question 1

Answer: Parents who give their crying children candy at the checkout counter are actually rewarding their bad behavior by giving the children something they want. This increases the likelihood that the child will cry again in the future to get what he or she wants.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Depressed people are encouraged to do specific things that will lead to rewards, based on the values that are important to them.
