Kelp forests and coral reefs both require a high light level, clear water (low sediment), and a hard substrate on which to attach. Kelp forests are found in areas of the world with considerable water column movement and water that averages roughly 10-12C in contrast to coral reefs, which thrive in warmer waters (water temperatures in excess of 20C).
