Answer to Question 1

ANS: F
The Earth's core absorbs the S wave creating shadow zones, but it has an impact on P waves as well.
The P waves can be deflected by the core. The interior of the Earth also affects the time in which the
waves arrive. S waves are much slower in comparison to the P waves. Information can be found in the
section The Study of Earthquakes Provides Evidence of Layering.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: F
Although Francis Bacon did believe there was a correspondence between the shapes of the continents,
Alfred Wegener was the first to call the theoretical single continent Pangaea and the surrounding ocean
Panthalassa. Wegener thought Pangaea started breaking apart approximately 200 million years ago,
being slung towards the equator as the result of centrifugal force. Information can be found in the
section Pieces of Earth's Surface Look Like They Once Fit Together.
