Answer to Question 1

ANS:Answer
should include:
According to Dr. Diamond, non-sustainable advances and overexploitation are reasons
that humans are threatened today and why prior civilations have collapsed
Whether the resolution of the worlds environmental problems will be one of human
choice or a result of warfare, genocide, starvation, disease epidemics, and collapse of
societies is of concern.
The frequency of the disease, starvation, genocide, and other human plights increases
with environmental degradation.
This is the first time in human history that we face the risk of global decline, but it is
also possible for humans to change the course of history by learning quickly from
modern developments and also from past civilations that have collapsed.

Answer to Question 2

ANS:Answer
should include:
Oil has always been naturally present in the ocean, but it has been on the rise.
More than half of the world's oil is transported on the ocean each year. Since the
increased transportation has occurred, there have been oil spills in the ocean. They are
not always large enough to warrant the news, but this is not the main source of increased
levels of oil found in the ocean.
Some oil is released during the loading, discharging, and flushing of the tanker ships
themselves. This accounts for 8 of the oil in the ocean.
Most of the oil that gets added to the ocean each year comes from the runoff of city
streets. This is perhaps the most dangerous addition of oil to the ocean. The oil has
carcinogenic properties in this form.
