Why is it important to use clean and dry reaction tubes/small test tubes in this experiment?

Question 2

The reaction shown below of biphenyl with two equivalents of the alkyl chloride in the presence of AlCl3 gave two products with very similar Rf values by TLC. One of these products was visualized under the UV lamp, while the other was not. Both products were observed when the plate was stained with iodine. Write the structures of both products.

Answer to Question 1

Any contaminants present in the tubes, especially water, could contribute to the overall dielectric heating of the compound being examined.

Answer to Question 2

One would expect to get a product similar to that obtained with t-butyl chloride, the alkyl halide used in this experiment. In addition, one would expect to see some of the product of elimination from the starting alkyl halide. A corresponding elimination product was not observed in the experiment starting with t-butyl chloride because 2- methylpropene is a gas.
