It identified a lag in gender research in that country. The last large-scale government study on violence against women had not been conducted since 1995. The sources of information were derived from police and hospital reports. However, it is believed that the vast majority of women do not come forward due to beliefs that the police will do little to help them. When domestic violence was reported, police statistics indicated it was on the rise.
