A police officer stops a car for a traffic infraction. He gets consent to search and discovers illegal drugs under a rear seat armrest. The officer may lawfully arrest the driver and passengers, all of whom denied owning the drugs.

In some circumstances when public safety is in jeopardy, interrogation is permissible without the Miranda warnings when a suspect is in custody. The Court also made it clear that the appropriate test for determining whether a threat to public safety exists is an objective oneit is based on what a reasonable person in the same circumstances would believe.
