Answer to Question 2

The Five Pillars of Islam represent the five essentials of Islamic faith. They are: (1) Testimony of Faith (Shahada) which is combined into a single statement. There is no true god but Allah, and Muhammad is his Prophet. It is the belief that Allah is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all merciful. (2) Prayer (Selah) which is performed five times a day: dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and at night. It is a quiet time for reflection and aid in guidance and mercy. Muslims try to go to mosque on Fridays for the noon prayer. (3) Giving Alms (Zakah) represents purification and growth in form of a payment to remind Muslims that all that they have is a gift. It also promotes a sense of community. (4) Fasting (Sawm) occurs in the ninth month of the Arabic calendar, Ramadan and entails fasting from food, drink and sexual relations from sun up to sun down. It is to gain understanding and sympathy with those who go hungry and to achieve spiritual growth. (5) Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) is a once in a lifetime trip in the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Pilgrims wear simple clothes and this trip represents a spiritual journey. Over 2 million people go to Mecca each year.

Answer to Question 3

Islam is one of the three great monotheistic religions of the world (along with Judaism
and Christianity) believing in one God. The religion traces its roots directly to the Prophet
Muhammad during the late 500s A.D. Muslims believe that Muhammad was visited by the
Archangel Gabriel and presented with the Word of Godthat there is but one GodAllah.
The communications between Muhammad and the Angel Gabriel were compiled into the
Qur'an, defining everything from the nature of God and Man to the mundane rituals of
cleanliness and bathing. Islam believes Jesus was also a Prophet, but not of divinity. Muslims also use the Old and New Testaments as part of their tradition. Christianity does not see Muhammad as the final Prophet of God, and doesn't use the Five Pillars. Muhammad, like Jesus, as accepted in some areas and not welcome in others. Both religions saw fractures, and developments of different components within the respective religions upon the deaths of Jesus and Muhammad. Islam has a Caliph, and the Catholic church has the Pope. Islam for the most part combines, or wants to combine religion and state, where Christianity separates church and state.
