More social stability, such as economic recovery; stronger, centralized governments; and longer periods of peace may have contributed to the rebirth of theatre, as well as relaxed rules by the Vatican, which sensed it must take steps to keep the allegiance of the common people.

Popular drama in the Middle Ages included mystery plays such as The Fall of Lucifer, morality plays such as Everyman, and miracle plays telling stories of the saints. These dramas reflect the centrality of the church in the lives of people at that time and their moral and religious world view.
