Answer to Question 1

Dual consciousness refers to the way in which an actor is both his/herself and outside his/herself. In ancient Greece, the word for actor was hypocrite, a term that later came to mean a deceiver or dissemblerone who stands outside his/herself to shape an illusion of truth. In his essay, The Paradox of the Actor, Denis Diderot, the eighteenth century thinker, dramatist, and critic, identified the dual consciousness of the actor as the way in which the actor is simultaneously inside his/herselfworking for a real emotional connectionand outside his/herselfshaping the presentation of the performance.
